So how big are wemics, anyway? How tall? Long? Heavy? How long do they live?
The 3.5 Player's Handbook (p.310) says that a large sized creature "is typically between 8 and 16 feet in height or length and weighs between 500 and 4,000 pounds." According to the 3E D&D write-up of wemics in WotC's Monsters of Faerun book (p.84), "from head to rump, they are 10 to 12 feet long, while they are 6 to 7 feet tall when standing erect." The Races of Faerun book say give the exact same dimensions for height and length, adding "They weigh around 600 pounds." That book goes on to say that wemics remain children only for five years, and live about 40 years on average; the age categories for half-orcs apply to wemics.
Lions in the real world are mature at age 3 to 4, and seldom live more than 20 years. They average around 9 feet long and 4 feet tall. Weight ranges from 400 to 500 pounds.
A few other people have thought about it. Like this, and like this.
My personal feeling is that liontaurs should not be as beastial, nor as big, as wemics in the Faerun books. I prefer to imagine a smaller creature, entirely human from the waist up, aside perhaps from mane-like hair, cat eyes, and slightly pointy teeth.
With the real life data on lions in mind, and picturing a smaller, less monsterous liontaur, I came up with these tables for figuring out the vital statistics of liontaurs. To use these tables, roll 2d12 for a number from 2 to 24. Or pick a number from 2 to 24 if you like. That number is referred to below as the modifier, or "mod."
