Secondary Classes
Most players will choose to use primary classes to create their characters. Primary classes (referred to simply as "classes" elsewhere in the rules) are: barbarian, bard, cleric, druid, fighter, monk, paladin, ranger, rogue, sorcerer, summoner, and wizard. These 12 classes are designed for adventuring and the hazards player characters regularly face. On the other hand, secondary classes were conceived as classes for normal, everyday folk, that is, not players. In other versions of the game, these are called "Non-Player Character Classes," and the game assumes that game masters will use these secondary classes to define and flesh out most of the characters in the campaign who are not players.
Although secondary classes are weaker than primary classes and don't have the same range of choice in selecting class abilities, they may nonetheless offer interesting options for players. If a player wishes to use secondary classes, note the following adjustments:
- You may multiclass into secondary classes freely, with no XP penalty for unbalanced progression.
- So long as you take secondary classes exclusively, you gain a +10% bonus on all experience points awarded by the game master. You retain this benefit even if you have a prestige class, so long as you have more secondary class levels than you do prestige class levels.
There are five secondary character classes defined in Labyrinths & Liontaurs. They are:
Adept: Operating outside traditional hierarchies, adepts often serve everyday folk who otherwise have no access to magical services. They are often witches, hedge wizards, shamans, itinerant preachers, and faith healers.
Aristocrat: Nobles, landed gentry, successful merchants, and the elite, aristocrats gain the advantages of wealth and privilege.
Commoner: Commoners are the peasants, serfs, humble crafters, and working laborers who make up the great mass of people in the world. They are the salt of the earth, and their hard labor is the foundation of society.
Expert: Those who specialize in a specific set of skills are invaluable when that expertise is required. Experts learn to use their skills in ways that regular folk, and even adventurers, cannot.
Warrior: Town guards, soldiers, and mercenaries, and anybody who needs the force of arms and the protection of armor -- warriors form the backbone of the combatant forces in the world.
